>> i'm told that he's all but certain to run. as you full well know, in that once the senate is gone, this is going to happen pretty quickly. >> reporter: a -- emanuel's been reaching out talking with quigley today and davis last flight. >> we talked about the kind of campaigning that should take place and that every effort should be made to have erroneous relationships. >> reporter: early on the top aid met with jesse jackson jr. looking to set a civil tone for a race that now appears over before it begins in jackson's case. reports of an improper relationship with a d.c. area hostess delivering a fatal blow. >> this is an issue of character. it's an issue of to family and faith.

>> reporter: late today an ap report that tom doddy is all in. he says not so fast. >> a lot of people have come to me and it's been very flattering. i was told i would look at it. it's an office i felt i could do good things at but i wasn't ready to make the decision yet. >> reporter: and looking like he's on the campaign trail for a long time. luis gutierrez. he's yet another politician who is carefully testing the waters. >> here's what i have done. i opened the campaign fund. we put $25,000 in the fund to pay for those posters and t- shirts and for the operations. we're going to go out and poll. >> reporter: a will the -- lot of polling going on. told us in this studio today that she loves the job she has now but has refused to rule out a run for mayor.

>> thank you. 82 years old and a veteran chicago politician is running again. the oldest member of the city council wants an 11th term. he feels his experience is needed because of daley's retire. >> a new mayor is going to need someone like myself to guide him. this is going to be an awesome responsibility. >> the people on this ward are very much ready for a change. they're ready for someone with a vision, determination, someone that's going to be very service-oriented to the people. >> or her. his youthful opponent could be tough to beat. he won his last election by just 700 votes. man accusing of doing everything from assassinating mayor daley painting the water in chicago remains behind bars.

sami samir hassoun faced a court today. he requested a psychology evaluation. the attorney reports he is competent to stand trial but things need to be considered. 19-year-old george lash was shot by officers at the 55th street station. they called police saying he had a gun. he pointed that gun after officers and that's when they shot him. the lawyer for the victim's parents spoke with two witnesses who say they never saw lash with a gun. those witnesses were not interviewed by police. >> we've had a summer of violence between citizens and police officers. what i'm afraid of is because of this violence that the police are not rushing their critical judgments too quickly. >> it's not safe.

not for the people or police department. >> victims parents say he was trying to go back to school and get a ged. cta officials say train cars are not equipped with surveillance cameras but the guard stations have them. what the cameras show backs the police's version. here we are in september. the state reporting the first death related to west nile virus. the victim is an oakbrook woman in her 80s who was diagnosed in august. there are now 14 cases reported around illinois. more than last year. but human immunity and spraying efforts have kept it relatively under control. surveillance video could crack a burglary at an apple store. at 120 west jefferson breaking through a glass door before 5:00 this morning. an officer spotted the damage and called it in.

>> julie unruh has the story on the two ladies who are now bound by the generous gift of life. >> hello. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> reporter: arlene hoffman doesn't have a shy bone in her body. the 54-year-old postal carrier stopped by northwestern memorial hospital a week after surgery. >> the kidney is the size of the human fist. >> reporter: arlene and her surgeons say she is doing great. she donated to 49-year-old jane delimba. she used to deliver the mail to her in the estates and knew she'd been sick. hoffman saw delimba was in need of a kidney. last week she told wgn : >> she needs it. i can't put it in words. i mean, she needs it. she's a good person. she deserves more than what she's been dealt. >> reporter: today a week after

the transplant, both women are on the mend. >> it was -- yeah. it was a bond that's going to keep on growing. >> reporter: here's the fascinating part. these ladies weren't alone in the operating room. there were eight patients in and out of surgery all day. four kidney donors, four recipients. it took about six doctors 12 hours to complete the exchange process. because they weren't a medical match, doctors did a swap of sorts. her kidney actually went to elizabeth simms. and delimba received hers from 35-year-old yvonne foster. a moving experience at the hospital. >> thank you. >> reporter: today they all met for the first time learning exactly who gave them new life.

themselves. he says it ends with development and not relevance. a new book on the president says he and his aids are deeply divided on the wars. in it woodward writes that the president insisted on a timetable and then withdrew because he was worried about losing support. the book also said top members of the national security team don't believe the president's true buildup strategy will actually work. she was the leader of the feminist movement. a force to be reckoned with. years later she's just as feisty and steadfast to get everyone on a level playing field. i had the opportunity to sit down to tea with gloria steinem and a group of journalists. before the tea, we sat down for one on one. >> reporter: gloria steinem was

a face for the feminist movement. today at 75 years old, gloria steinem is still fighting for equality for women but mostly for everyone. although she does believe we've come a long way, baby. >> look how far we've come in 30, 40 years and project that into the future to see how far we can go. so we can get to a place where there is a family leave and parental leave so men are raising children just as much. >> reporter: she came to chicago with a group of journalists and for candidate giannoulias. >> he reminds me of kennedy when he became a senator. he is full of energy, great on every issue. by great i mean he represents the majority views. >> reporter: steinem don't hold back. weighing in on this interview

on a ton of issues. including the chief of staff rahm emanuel. >> he sort of didn't choose the right person in rahm emanuel who is not known for being pro- woman. perhaps you have an outplacement service here if you get him as mayor, you'll get him out of washington. >> reporter: but the one person he thinks should be in washington for a while is president barack obama. >> i don't think anyone or earth could do better than obama in the situation. he's doing the best he can. >> reporter: as far as the women in politics like sarah palin, steinem sees it as a win- win for the right wing. >> it's kind of a sign of success that they have to get sarah palin. people who do not represent the majority in the hopes of confusing people. luckily we're smart and it's not about getting a job for one woman, it's about making life more equal for all women.

>> reporter: she does get heated when she talks about bill brady. >> probably if one were to look at the whole nation is the most against female equality of any candidate in the nation. there's not one single issue on which he represents the majority view of women. >> now, we did put a call into bill brady's office. we got this quote from a spokesperson. gloria steinem is not a registered voter in illinois. perhaps that's why she's not familiar with bill's record. bill is fighting to improve illinois' jobs climate so that women and their families have jobs annuitants. she was a very interesting woman though. still very feisty at 75. can you believe it? >> looks great for her age. as for brady, they could not be polar opposites on the political spectrum. coming up: free beer just

matters. a new study finds the older you get, the slower your reaction time even after just two drinks. study participants were below the legal limit yet 61-62-year- olds were significantly impaired after drinking two vodka juices. the reaction time cut in half. they were more likely to hit obstacles when walking and their gait was altered. think your doctor's giving you good advice? check out their health first. a university of michigan study finds doctors who are overweight do not counsel their patients on being overweight. a physician's confidence in giving patient advice was directly related to their own personal habits. keeping costs under control. as we head into cold and flu season, a way to stop the spread of disease. they've developed a new drug

there is some margin of error there. time lapse cameras caught what started off to be a pretty brewery looking day over chicago. we had a lot of cloudiness. there's a cloud or two out there but it's just partly cloudy out at the moment. we will see the skies cloud over again tonight as thunderstorms roll east through southern wisconsin. there's a slight chance some of that energy may effect the northern suburbs later on tonight. we're thinking probably the stormy weather will hold off until maybe tomorrow night or into friday. temperatures today up to 74 degrees. plenty of cold air up there in canada as it's making it way down the central plains. some of that air will be effecting us over the next seven days but not thunderstorm. look at these tonight. we have fallen to 65 at the moment with dew points in the low 60s across the area.

that produces a mild overnight period. winds have been off of lake michigan all day today and the water temperature is 68. so that's had a cooling effect around the lake front. those areas adjacent in the 60s. there's that cold air. watch it slowly through the animation. you can see it's moving across and settling over the chicago area that following tomorrow's very warm high temperature. then retreating allowing a bit of a warm up but more cool air is coming in over the weekend and the weekend beyond. the weekends both look chilly. the next one after this next one looks very chilly. this is a map of present watches and warnings and so forth. this green area up to our north, those are actually flood watch areas. this is the reason. area of showers and thunderstorms that's tracking

through southern minnesota into central wisconsin. it is moving east, but the southern edge of that may expand a little. so we'll have to keep our eyes out to the northern suburbs tonight. meanwhile, back in nebraska, showers and storms there as well. some of these big hail producers. we're thinking that some of this is actually going to make its way into the chicago area with time. now, there have been 146 severe weather reports across the country today. 85 of them damaging wind reports and most of those coming out of the northeast. that line of storms, showers and thunderstorms finally making their way into the atlantic leaving it rather messy i suspect on the roadways through parts of pennsylvania and new york state. there is the computer animation. you can see the storms headed in our direction. expect to see them over the next 36 hours. forecast for tonight skies will be mostly cloudy. showers are possible. low 64-68. later tonight a front will pass, our winds will turn

the dream act died in congress but not in the hearts of its backers. the immigration bill that would have made undocumented college students legal. >> lourdes duarte is here with more. >> reporter: thousands of undocumented students are thinking what's next? the much talked about dream act got shot down in the senate. today a group here in chicago rallied yet again at graham park to get politicians to keep fighting. [ up with education, down with deportation ] >> reporter: the dream act was added on as an amendment to the defense bill. the bill helps undocumented youth, it gives them a pathway to citizenship if they were brought here under the age of 16, have lived in the u.s. for

five years, don't have a criminal record and choose to go on to college or the military. on the house side gutierrez has been the biggest advocate. he says he plans to keep on fighting. obviously nothing will happen before the november elections, but there are already talks to reintroduce it. that is welcomed news for the thousands of students who have been keeping their eye on the bill since 2001 when it was first introduced. >> yesterday the futures of myself and others were voted on by officials. so i will not talk about the dream as a piece of legislation. it was a symbol of hope from those who graduate from high school each year. >> we think the parents is engaged in this fight. i think he's kind of been on the sidelines but now he's truly engaged and i look
